ℹ️ Good to know about Kemer

Kemer is a distict in the Antalya province on the Mediterranean coast of the Turkish Riviera. It is a seaside resort about 25 km west of the region\'s capital city of Antalya. It lies on the Gulf of Antalya amid the Taurus Mountains. Since the 1980s this quiet rural district has developed into a town with a large role in Turkey\'s tourism.

Kemer\'s climate is typically Mediterranean with long summers that are hot and dry with temperatures often exceeding 40 Centigrade and with mild, rainy winters which rarely fall below 10 Centigrade.

History of Kemer

The word \"kemer\" means belt or wall in Turkish and the city of Kemer gets its name from a 23 km long stone wall built to protect the town from flooding from the mountain stream. Before 1916 the area was known as Eski Köy (Old Village).

Eski Köy was originally reachable only by boat. A road was built in the 60\'s which created access to the area and paved the way for the expansion of the 1980\'s. Kemer\'s development was fueled by funds from the World Bank which were invested in infrastructure designed to turn Kemer into a tourist destination. After easy transportation links, there were developed many hotels in 1990\'s.

Phaselis is a Hellenistic & Roman ancient city dated 4.th century BC. It is only 10 km away from the Kemer town center. Boat tours departing from Kemer visit its two deep blue coloured harbour for swimming pause.

Kemer\'s main attraction is its natural beauty of the Mediterranean sea, the Taurus mountains and the pine forest. The beaches are mostly unspoiled and are made of stone rather than sand. Kemer\'s modern transportation, communication and municipal services have resulted in a large tourist industry, attracting visitors mostly from Russia, Germany and the Netherlands. Many visitors come on \"all-inclusive\" group tours and patronize Kemer\'s 5 star hotels.

Kemer is divided into 4 municipalities: Beldibi, Çamyuva, Göynük and Tekirova. In addition there are 4 villages. Three Islands and Eco Park are tourist sites in Kemer and Phaselis, Olympus and Cirali have some of the most extensive ancient ruins in the region, including the Chimaera, the eternal flame of the gods which burns on a mountaintop.

Tourism is the primary industry in Kemer\'s economy with shops catering to tourists, selling designer goods in Euros. Kemer also boasts an active night-life, with clubs and discos.

Kemer\'s marina has many restaurants and is also a working harbor for boats from the USA and Europe which are docked there for the winter season.

Kemer\'s local markets, which provide the residents with the necessities of everyday life and the toursist with souvenirs, take place on Mondays and Tuesdays. Mondays are for food and kitchen items; Tuesdays are for clothing, textiles and souvenirs.

There are several annual events in the area: art exhibitions in Phaselis, boat races, WRC (World Rally Championship), Turkey Offshore Championship, Turkey Motocross Championship, Phaselis\' Art Festival, and Kemer\'s Carnival. Concerts by International pop stars take place in the sumer months.
