The reactions to your tattoo plans can often turn out to be something similar. And you can even understand them, at least in part: Usually, you don't think it's a particularly clever idea to let a few asterisks be stuck on your shoulder on vacation, blessed with the sun and the ease of being. And yes, there are certainly a number of black sheep among the felt millions of tattoo shops that would bring tears to the eyes of the inspectors of the health authorities at home.

You had carried the tattoo plan around with you for a long time. It should be colored, on the inside of the forearm. Only: what exactly? A flamingo? A hummingbird? At some point you knew: you want flowers. Just flowers. The risk that at some point you might not like them anymore seemed low to you. You will also find it rather romantic to think that the flowers will eventually fade with the skin. That doesn't make the thought of ink in aged skin so unbearable.

But your ideas weren't exactly concrete - until you were in Side. There you finally had enough time to think it over carefully. A friend reminded you of how great poppies are, and when your mother also sent Hermann Hesse's poem “Julikinder” for her birthday, in which these flowers appear, it was clear: poppies had to be tattooed. A flower typical of Turkey should also be included: the knapweed. This is how your design came about.

What is a tattoo?

A tattoo is a motif that is applied to the skin with ink or other color pigments.

For this purpose, the color is usually stuck into the second layer of skin with the help of a tattoo machine through one or more needles (depending on the desired effect) and an image or text is drawn. The tattoo represents a form of body modification that can only be removed with great effort by technology.

About the history of tattooing

Again and again it was tried to find a place of origin of the tattoo. Because of the diverse and scattered information scattered all over the world, it can be assumed that the custom of tattooing has developed independently and independently of the different peoples of the world. The oldest evidence of tattoos comes from South America and Europe. In northern Chile, 7,000-year-old mummies were found with tattoos on the hands and feet. Over 5000 years ago, the Ötzi glacier mummy bore several characters that were placed under the skin with needles or small incisions.

Tattoos can have very different functions and meanings. The literature mentions functions as a membership sign, ritual or sacred symbol, expression for demarcation (see also Bourdieu) and exclusivity, means of enhancing sexual stimuli, jewelry, protest (punk) and, last but not least, that of political opinion. In any case, it is always a decision of each individual. You may like it or not!

Tattoos originally had the stigma of a sailor or convict in the West, but have enjoyed greater popularity since the 1990s at the latest. What began predominantly as an expression of a youth culture that also includes piercing and branding can now be found in broad sections of society. Children use adhesive pictures that can be easily removed, but operate under the term tattoo. Similarly, there are so-called henna tattoos that are not stuck into the skin but painted on. Only the horny layer of the epidermis is colored here. Since these keratinized cells desquamate continuously, the alleged tattoo disappears after a few weeks.

Tattooing process

In the 1990s, tattoos became a real fashion trend. So-called tribal tattoos in particular experienced their heyday here. Tribals (also called Irban) found their way under the skin in various forms. Under the joking name of ass antlers, it was particularly common among female wearers to find a tribal tattoo placed on the rump.

The tattoo process basically consists of puncturing the skin, whereby a dye is introduced into the skin at the same time as the piercing. It is important to ensure that the stitch is neither too superficial nor too deep. In the first case, the stored dye would only be introduced into the cell layers of the epidermis. This would have the consequence that if this layer of skin was continuously renewed, the color particles would grow out and reject outwards at the same time as the epidermal cell layers. In the second case, if the puncture is made too deep in the skin, the bleeding will wash out the colors. Those color pigments that are stored in the middle skin layer (dermis), namely in the cell type of the fibroblasts, are durable.

The most common method in the West is working with an electric tattoo machine. Here z. B. with the help of two coils generates a magnetic field that moves a number of fine, soldered to a rod needles quickly back and forth. Another tattoo machine works with an electric motor, which generates the up and down movement via an eccentric.

There are different ways to have the tattoo removed, but it is very complex. So you should think very carefully.

Hygiene and tattooing

Strict hygiene regulations must be observed when tattooing. These are not always checked, so some caution is advisable. HIV, hepatitis and various other infections can occur. Tattoo studios in Turkey are now subject to strict requirements and controls, which has been very beneficial to general health security in this area. Interventions, sterilization processes, cleaning and disinfection measures are now documented there in writing.

There is no typical training like in the skilled trades. If you want to learn the art of tattooing, you go informally to a tattoo artist. The basic techniques can usually be learned in 2–3 years.

Many years of experience and knowledge are also required to have the tattoo removed. Almost the same career in practice.
