Turkey is often described as a single, giant open-air museum, and that is what it undoubtedly is. Yet it is far more than just a collection of historical sites; it is a country where history is not dusty, but alive and flows into everyday life.
The performance of Carmina Burana in the ancient Aspendos Theater - a recurring and integral part of the International Opera and Ballet Festival.
The roots of culture and customs run deep here - from the first traces of grain cultivation to viticulture, countless civilizations have left their mark in Anatolia. Accordingly, the festivals also find their roots in this great and rich past: They are the mirror of these deep-seated, millennia-old cultures and customs of many civilizations.
That is why I don't think I'm exaggerating when I claim that there are countries that have good festivals - and then there is Turkey. For me, every year it feels as if the whole country is falling into a pulsating cultural rhythm: music, dance, film, gastronomy, deeply rooted tradition.
And I get to experience all of this up close because I am constantly traveling between my beloved hometown of Istanbul and the sunny metropolis of Antalya. This geographical and emotional axis between history and modernity is my very personal festival-DNA.
No matter where I go, one thing remains the same: A festival year in Turkey is never boring.
Aspendos: The magical place that keeps calling me back
When I think of festivals, everything starts for me in a single place: Aspendos.
I visited there for the first time as a child - and even if you visit it a hundred times, it doesn't lose an ounce of its magic. This 2000-year-old Roman theater has an acoustics that cannot be explained. You have to sit there, feel the warm stones, and hear the first sounds. Only then do you understand it.
Every year I particularly look forward to the International Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival with its world-class productions.
Anatolian Fire (The Fire of Anatolia): Dance that unites thousands of years of history in a single, breathtaking choreography.
A Moment for Eternity: Anatolian Fire. The dance that unites thousands of years of history in a single, breathtaking choreography.
Regardless of the festival program, there is an experience that takes place in the same ancient setting and is nothing short of spectacular: Anatolian Fire (Anadolu Ateşi).
Nothing beats the feeling when this huge dance group performs in Aspendos. The energy from the combination of modern moves and thousand-year-old Anatolian dances is so powerful that everyone ends up standing - Young, Old, Tourist, Local. It's more than a show - it's a collective adrenaline moment that I will never forget.
My Conclusion: If someone asks me which festival in Turkey you absolutely must experience? → Aspendos. Period.
Istanbul: Jazz, Art & Film in a metropolis full of soul
While Aspendos touches my heart, Istanbul is my pulse. When festivals take place there, the city transforms into an open, pulsating art museum.
Pure Istanbul vibes: Jazz enjoyment at one of the many unique venues of the Istanbul & Akbank Jazz Festivals.
Why I love Istanbul?
Because you can listen to jazz on a rooftop. Because film festivals nestle into historical halls. Because even the sounds of the Bosphorus match the rhythm.
I rarely miss these events:
- Istanbul Jazz Festival & Akbank Jazz Festival: Jazz on the Bosphorus is an unforgettable experience that celebrates the avant-garde side of the scene.
- Istanbul Film Festival (İKSV): Where Turkish and international cinema worlds meet.
Filmart, passion, and red carpets: The Istanbul Film Festival (İKSV) is the pulsating meeting point every year where Turkish cinema looks out at the world and the enthusiasm of young directors is palpable.
Film Festivals that Celebrate Turkish Cinema
Turkish cinema has a fascinating way of telling emotions raw and unvarnished. Festivals like the Antalya Golden Orange (Altın Portakal) - often referred to as the "Oscar of Turkish Film" - or the Adana Golden Boll (Altın Koza) impressively reflect this diversity. Especially in Antalya, you can feel how the city comes alive during the Altın Portakal.
Traditional Festivals: When History Comes Alive
Turkey unites modern art with deeply rooted traditions - a blend that makes cultural life unique. There are countless local festivals that breathe the soul of Anatolia. Here are some examples of festivals that have remained authentic to this day:
Şeb-i Arus
Focus & Region: Spiritual commemoration of Rumi (Konya)
When: December 10 - 17
Şeb-i Arus in Konya: Mevlana Rumi's 'Wedding Night'. A deeply spiritual and moving ceremony of whirling dervishes that attracts thousands of people from all over the world every December and conveys a feeling of timeless mysticism.
Nevruz
Focus & Region: Spring and New Year's Festival (Nationwide)
When: March 21
Nevruz: The exuberant start of spring on March 21. This traditional New Year's festival symbolizes the start of a new life cycle and is celebrated in Turkey with music, dance, and communal rituals.
Hıdrellez
Focus & Region: Symbolic start of spring (Nationwide)
When: May 5 to 6
Hıdrellez: On the night of May 5th to 6th, the symbolic start of spring and summer is celebrated exuberantly. Traditionally, wishes are buried in rose gardens and people jump over small bonfires for cleansing and renewal, symbolically leaving the old year behind.
Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling
Focus & Region: Anatolian wrestling tradition (Edirne)
When: Usually early July
Kırkpınar (Edirne): The oldest oil wrestling tournament in the world. The 'Pehlewan' (wrestlers) cover themselves from head to toe in olive oil and wrestle under the scorching sun for the title of 'Başpehlivan' - an archaic sport and a deeply rooted Anatolian tradition, which usually takes place in July.
These events are not staged for tourists - they reflect authentic Turkish everyday life, culture, and history.
Example: The Cultural Density of the Antalya Region
In addition to these national traditions, the Antalya region itself is a cultural hotspot with an extraordinary density of regional events. A small selection:
- Kaleiçi Old Town Festival: A local festival that focuses on the historical old town (Kaleiçi) and celebrates its unique history with parades, dance, and music.
- GastroAntalya Food Fest: Although it attracts international top chefs, the focus is strongly on Mediterranean products and the local cuisine of the Aegean and the Taurus Mountains.
A feast for the senses: Turkey's numerous gastro-festivals celebrate the incredible diversity of regional cuisine - from the aromatic spices of Antep to the fresh, local products of the Aegean. Here the rich culinary history of the country comes alive
For Connoisseurs: The Best Food and Gastro Festivals
Turkish cuisine is considered one of the most diverse in the world. Throughout the year, numerous festivals invite you to discover regional specialties:
- GastroAntep: A must for anyone who loves spices, baklava, and the cuisine of Southeast Anatolia.
- Adana Lezzet Festivali: Grilling art and kebabs at the highest level.
- Alaçatı Herb Festival: A celebration of spring herbs and local scents.
Lifestyle & Sport: The Modern Face of Turkey
In addition to historical and cultural events, Turkey also presents itself as modern, cosmopolitan, and dynamic. Fashion, design, maritime events, and international sporting events shape the calendar of events throughout the year.
Istanbul Fashion Week: The bridge between the continents becomes a fashion stage. The event celebrates the modern, cosmopolitan side of Istanbul and shows how traditional influences combine with avant-garde design.

The New Era: AKM & The Cultural Road Festival as a Forward-Looking Vision
The country presents itself not only historically and traditionally but also futuristically and dynamically. Two developments clearly demonstrate this modern aspiration:
The Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) in Istanbul: A shining masterpiece of modern architecture that symbolizes the present and future of Turkish art on Taksim Square. With its brilliant acoustics and spectacular design, the AKM redefines the standards for performing arts.
The Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) in Istanbul
The newly restored AKM is more than a building; it is a cultural statement and a symbol of the modern Turkish art scene. The acoustics are brilliant and the architecture sets new standards. The AKM is the new, shining heart of art in Istanbul.
The game-changer of the Turkish cultural scene: The Kültür Yolu Festivali (Cultural Road Festival) brings art to all of Turkey and has the mission of bringing the 'hidden treasures' of every region - from crafts to music - to light.
The Cultural Road Initiative (Kültür Yolu Festivali)
The Kültür Yolu Festivali is a game-changer. It brings the "hidden treasures" of every region, from local crafts and unique dances to regional cuisine, to light and makes them accessible to a broad audience.
Outlook for the Next Year
The next season will also be a year full of cultural highlights. Here are the most important ones to note:
- June-September: Aspendos Opera & Ballet Festival
- June-July: Istanbul Jazz and Music Festivals
- December: Antalya Piano Festival
- December: Mevlana Festival in Konya
- November: Istanbul Marathon
In addition, there are many other festivals and events that make Turkey a cultural hotspot every year.
Ancient and futuristic, loud and quiet: Turkey manages to harmoniously unite historical depth and modern dynamism. That is the essence of the 'Cultural Symphony' - a country full of rhythm, diversity, and soul.
Conclusion: Turkey - A Cultural Symphony
For me, Turkey is one of the most inspiring and multi-faceted countries in the world. Every festival has its own soul.
- Aspendos: The immortal voice of antiquity.
- Istanbul: The pulsating beat of modernity in the AKM and on the Bosphorus.
- The Kültür Yolu Festivali: The bridge that connects the entire cultural spectrum of Turkey.
Traditional and futuristic, ancient and modern, loud and quiet - Turkey manages to harmoniously unite all these opposites. And that is exactly where its cultural strength lies.
P.S.: I will list the exact dates of the noteworthy festivals and events on my News Platform.
